Overview of the Department The Department of Mechanical Engineering is involved in substantial training in design techniques to prepare the diplomates for an exciting career in this rapidly developing field of Mechanical Engineering at a higher level. The vision of the department is to create an interface between the classroom and industry with sound and effective practical courses and relate the use of Mechanical Engineering techniques to design, implement, assemble, operate, maintain, and repair equipment/manufacturing machines/engines to manage systems to meet the needs of the manufacturing, construction, energy, and other related industries. The department is adequately staffed with qualified Lecturers, Technologists, and Technicians who are well-grounded in theory, and practical knowledge with sound industrial experience. Course Objectives On completion of the HND Manufacturing Engineering Technology programme, the diplomates should: • Apply basic principles of Engineering, Science, and Mathematics to solve Engineering problems. • Function as technicians and technologists in manufacturing, energy, construction as well as other related industries; • Participate in the development of machines and equipment for domestic and industrial applications • Operate various machine tools and equipment in the manufacturing of engineering components. • Apply the various manufacturing management techniques; • Design tools and jigs and produce proto-type of such items; • Prepare CNC part program and use CNC machines to make simple jobs as well as interface CAD/CAM machines. • Perform material testing for its properties using traditional and non-destructive techniques (NDT) • Fabricate metal products using various techniques and processes; • Observe relevant safety precautions,, environmental awareness and sustainability principles in manufacturing and other related Engineering practice; •Carry out installation, maintenance and repair of machines and equipment; • Manage materials resources optimally in the manufacturing industries at this level. • Supervise mechanical engineering technicians, craftsmen and artisans in a manufacturing and other process and industrial plants; • Manage an enterprise effectively and efficiently Available Modes of Study Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Full Time, Part Time Entry Requirements for ND Programme Applicants with any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission into the National Diploma Programme by direct entry: Senior Secondary School Certificate (S.S.S.C.E) or its equivalent (NABTEB, GCE, NECO, etc) with a credit pass in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one other subject from Biology/Agricultural Science, Geography, Economics, Further Mathematics, Woodwork, Metal Work, Auto-mechanics, and Technical Drawing. Entry Requirements for the HND Programme The general entry requirements for the HND programmes include: a) All the requirements for admission into ND program in Mechanical Engineering Technology. b) A minimum of lower credit (CGPA) of 2.50 and above in ND in Mechanical Engineering Technology with one-year post-ND industrial experience. c) In exceptional cases, diplomates with a pass grade (CGPA) 2.0 - 2.49 in the ND with minimum of two years post ND industrial experience may be admitted into the HND programme.
