Overview of the Department The National Diploma Programme was accorded resource approval in November, 2016 by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the full accreditation was secured in November, 2020. The accreditation team revisited the Polytechnic on 29th November, 2022 for the resource approval for Higher National Diploma (HND) Taxation Programme. The result was favourable as the HND Programme was approved in December, 2022 by the Board. Course Objectives Goal of the ND Programme The goal of the National Diploma (ND) programme in Taxation is to produce intermediate technical manpower with sound theoretical and practical knowledge for graduates who can effectively perform a range of various functions in the industry, private and public enterprises; Collect and integrate basic financial date for use in tax decisions; Assist in the preparation of the final account of companies and other financial organisations for tax returns purposes; Assist in the preparation of short-term and long-term budgets; collect and collate relevant Taxation information to aid superior officers and management of tax decisions as well as Computing basic financial and statistical ratios for tax liability determinations. Goal of the HND Programme The Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in Taxation is aimed at producing graduates with sound technical, theoretical and practical know how and skills to carry out number of activities in taxation ranging from; Conduct a structured survey on any aspect of tax matters and making appropriate recommendation(s) to the authority; To identify tax management problems at the appropriate levels; Analyse them and design management strategy to overcome them; To carry out inspection and auditing of books and records for tax purposes; To carry out evaluation of investment assets for investment tax purposes and assist in the analysis of the investment tax proposals; To interpret basis statistical data; To assist in the preparation of short term and long term budgets and tax plans; To write tax and business reports and carry out various types of business communication effectively; To apply knowledge of basic economic concepts and principles to taxation matters; To apply knowledge of accounting to different types of tax transactions; To use statistical inferences as aids to business and tax plans and control; To apply knowledge of law to various tax matters; To apply mathematical and other qualitative techniques in tax management decision process; To perform duties with high ethical standard and To manage more effectively a personal business. Available Modes of Study: Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Full Time, Part Time. Part Time Evening & ODFeL Entry Requirements for ND Programme Applicant with the following qualifications may be considered for admission into National Diploma (ND) programme in Taxation by direct entry: Senior Secondary Certificate or its equivalent (WAEC, NECO, GCE Ordinary Level) with five credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any other three subjects from the following; Economics/Commerce, Business Methods, Principles of Accounts, Book Keeping, Literature in English, History, Statistics, Geography, Civil Education, Government, Agricultural Science/Biology obtained at not more than two sittings or five passes in relevant subjects as stated above obtained as the final examination of NABTEB. The structure of the curriculum of ND Taxation programme consists of four main components, these includes: General Studies Courses, Foundational Courses, Professional Courses and Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) The curriculum of the programme is structured into for semester of classroom/workshop/laboratory activities within the institution and three (3) to four (4) months supervised industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in relevant industry. Each semester of the institutional based activities shall be for seventeen (17) weeks duration distributed as follow; 15 weeks of teaching including practicals, tests, quizzes and so on and two weeks shared for registration and examination Entry Requirements for HND Programme Applicant with the following qualifications may be considered for admission into Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in Taxation by direct entry: Senior Secondary Certificate or its equivalent (WAEC, NECO, GCE Ordinary Level) with five credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any other three subjects from the following; Economics/Commerce, Business Methods, Principles of Accounts, Book Keeping, Literature in English, History, Statistics, Geography, Civil Education, Government, Agricultural Science/Biology obtained at not more than two sittings or five passes in relevant subjects as stated above obtained as the final examination of NABTEB.
