About The School
The Centre for General Studies (CGS) evolved from the old Department of General Studies (GNS) with the presentation of a position paper and backing facts extracted from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) edicts. The Centre for General Studies (CGS) birthed from the old General Studies (GNS), is currently about six (6) years old. With the evolution of the Centre for General Studies (CGS) from the old Department of General Studies (GNS), opportunity for dynamism was created. That is Departments such as Social Development and others are bound to be created\born in the nearest future, that is, in additional to General Studies (GNS) courses. The Centre for General Studies (CGS) is duly accredited by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). In the most recent Institutional Accreditation which took place in December, 2021, the Centre Head presented the Units and courses domiciled in General Studies and express approval for running of the Units and courses was granted by NBTE. Presently, the Centre has five (5) Units in operation under General Studies, with various courses domiciled in these Units, and in addition to these units. In existence are other General Studies (GNS) courses taken by service lecturers domiciled in other Departments in the Institution. The Centre for General Studies (CGS) is headed by a Director with the title Centre Head and working with him are Units heads appointed to coordination matters relating to each Unit. In addition to the Coordinators in the Units working with the Centre Head, the service lecturers domiciled in other Departments in the Institution also report to the Centre on all General Studies (GNS) courses taken by them. The Centre for General Studies staff is made up of the Followings: The Director as Centre Head with Core Teaching Staff, Core Non-Teaching staff headed by the Centre Secretary as Unit Head and Service Lecturers domiciled in other Departments in the Institution. The Centre for General Studies has an array of Committees constituted to ensure appropriate running of the Centre and also prides herself in the area of staff welfare and working condition. Service Units [CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION UNIT] Overview of the Unit Citizenship Education Unit was created on the evolution of the Centre for General Studies (CGS) from the old Department for General Studies (GNS). The Unit comprises of Lecturers, headed by a Unit head who assigns Economics courses to be lectured in various Departments in the Institution. Citizenship Education is a compulsory course offered across all Departments at National Diploma level. Course domiciled in the Citizenship Education Unit are as reflected below: 1. Citizenship Education I. 2. Citizenship Education II. 3. Outline of Africa. 4. International Relations. Course Objectives 1. Citizenship Education provides robust learning on fundamental subjects for political socialization. 2. Trending global issues bordering on democracy, human rights and rule of law are discussed extensively. 3. Students are taught their roles as citizens in partnership with the government and nation building. Available Modes of Study: Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Courses in the Citizenship Education Unit are taken by students at all levels in the Institution, as well as at Part-Time level. [ECONOMICS UNIT] Overview of the Unit The Economics Unit was created on the evolution of the Centre for General Studies (CGS) from the old Department for General Studies (GNS). The Unit comprises of Lecturers, headed by a Unit head who assigns Economics courses to be lectured in various Departments in the Institution. The basic purpose of the Economics Unit is to create understanding on application of critical Economic Concepts and Theories to Managerial decision making and other field of studies. The courses domiciled in the Economics unit are as under listed: 1. MKT 114 – Principles of Economics I. 2. PAD 114 – Principles of Economics I. 3. GNS 413 – Industrial Management. 4. BAM 114 – Principles of Economics I. 5. BFN 112 – Principles of Economics I. 6. GNS 124 – General Economics. 7. HBF 412 – Public Finance. 8. HBF 327 – Monetary Economics. 9. HBF 427 – Managerial Economy. 10. GNS 222.122 – General Economics. 11. MKT 124 – Principles of Economics II. 12. BAM 124 – Principles of Economics II. Course Objectives The course in the Economics Units are designed to expose students to basic terminologies in Economics, International finance, Monetary Finance, Allocation of Resources, etc., so as to appreciate and develop the students. Available Modes of Study: Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Economics courses are taken by students at all levels in the Institution, as well as at Part-Time level, but of course as each individual course relates to Departmental course content in the NBTE curriculum. [ENGLISH UNIT] Overview of the Unit The English Unit was created on the evolution of the Centre for General Studies (CGS) from the old Department for General Studies (GNS). The Unit comprises of Lecturers, headed by a Unit head who assigns English courses to be lectured in various Departments in the Institution. Courses Domiciled in the English Unites are as under listed: 1. GNS 101- Use of English I. 2. GNS 201 - Use of English II Course Objectives The basic objectives of teaching English courses are ……… Available Modes of Study: Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Courses in the English Unit are taken at all levels in the Institution, as well as at the Part-Time level. [SOCIOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY UNIT] Overview of the Unit The sociology and Psychology Unit was created on the evolution of the Centre for General Studies (CGS) from the old Department for General Studies (GNS). The Unit comprises of Lecturers, headed by a Unit head who assigns Economics courses to be lectured in various Departments in the Institution. The basic function of the course domiciled in the Sociology and Psychology Unit, is to help the student develop appreciation for cultural values and heritage; and to also help create a civil society. The courses Domiciled in the Units are as under listed: 1. Introduction to Sociology. 2. Introduction to Psychology. Course Objectives 1. To give insight into cultural heritage of society and to also help they appreciate the cultural values of any society they find themselves. 2. To help students develop problem ability in resolution of social vices such as sexual violence, cybercrime, etc in the society. Available Modes of Study: Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Sociology and Psychology courses are taken at all levels in the Institution, as well as at Part-Time level, but of course as each individual course relates to departmental course content in the NBTE curriculum. [LAW UNIT] Overview of the Unit The Law Unit was created on the evolution of the Centre for General Studies (CGS) from the old Department for General Studies (GNS). The Unit comprises of Lecturers, headed by a Unit head who assigns Economics courses to be lectured in various Departments in the Institution. The Law unit is charged with the responsibility of providing law-related courses to students, to expose them to certain aspects of the Nigerian legal system. The specific areas of law that students undertake include: 1. General Principles of Law. 2. Business Law. 3. Company Law. 4. Property Law. 5. Labour Law. 6. Legal Aspects of Marketing. 7. Alternative to Dispute Resolution Mechanisms. 8. Banking Laws and Regulations. 9. Law of Contracts. Course Objectives Students are exposed to branches of law to enable them have an appreciable knowledge of; 1. their fundamental human rights under the 1999 Constitution of the FRN (as amended). 2. their duties as citizens. 3. To provide them with a legal background in their various professions. Available Modes of Study: Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Law courses are taken at all levels in the Institution, as well as at Part-Time level, but of course as each individual course relates to departmental course content in the NBTE curriculum. [SERVICE UNIT – USE OF LIBRARY] Overview of the Unit The use of Library lecturers are not domiciled in the Centre for General Studies. They are service lecturers, and the Lectures as well as course allocations are coordinated by the School Librarian. The lecturers servicing this Unit report to the Centre Head on all matter related to the Use of Library. The main course in this Unit is, GNS 107/117 - Use of Library. Use of Library is an Institutional course. It is a General course taken at the first semester of every session. The course is to educate or enlighten the students in appropriate the use of Library. Course Objectives Aim of teaching Use of Library 1. Introduction on background knowledge of the Library and its importance to learning. 2. Expose of student to proper use of the Library. 3. Impact knowledge on search for information from sources in the Library. 4. Education on how information resources accessed are processed, as well as ensure that appreciation of the impact of the Library on education and learning. Available Modes of Study: Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Use of Library is offered by students in all Departments at National Diploma. [SERVICE UNIT- GEOGRAPHY, CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY] Overview of the Unit Course Objectives Geography General Biology General Chemistry Available Modes of Study: Full Time, Part Time, Part Time Evening, ODFeL Courses taken by service lecturers in this Unit are offered by students in Departments where the course contents have these GNS courses as compulsory requirements in NBTE curriculum.
